It was held in Australia this year.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Between the lines:\u00a0<\/strong>The results from both companies show how far general-purpose models have progressed in solving advanced math problems and delivering the answers in natural language proofs.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Models that previously beat humans in Go, Poker and other competitions were trained specifically for those games.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The new high-performing models are general purpose models, the same ones they train for language, coding and science.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The results show that these models can perform better than those that have been hand-tuned for specific tasks.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Why it matters:\u00a0<\/strong>AI models are unusually difficult to benchmark because of the speed at which the tech is moving and the lack of a standard benchmarking system.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Zoom out:\u00a0<\/strong>Both models are experimental and won&#8217;t be released to the public &#8220;for a while,&#8221; OpenAI says. &#8220;Many months,&#8221; according to a post on X from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The model that competed in the IMO is &#8220;actually very close to the main Gemini model that we have been offering to people,&#8221; Google DeepMind senior staff research scientist Thang Luong told Axios.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>&#8220;So we are very confident that we can bring [the model] into the hands of our trusted testers very soon, especially the mathematicians,&#8221; Google wrote on its blog.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Yes, but:\u00a0<\/strong>Both Google and OpenAI praised the high school students participating in the Olympiad and were careful not to frame the competition as a bots vs. humans cage match.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The purpose of the IMO is to promote the &#8220;beauty of mathematics&#8221;
